JSX is a syntax extension for JavaScript that lets you write HTML-like markup directly inside JS/TS files. It isn't understood natively by browsers - a compiler (Babel, or the TypeScript/SWC compiler) transforms it at build time into plain function calls. Historically JSX like <div className="a">Hello</div> compiled to React.createElement('div', {className: 'a'}, 'Hello'). Since React 17's 'new JSX transform', tooling instead emits calls to jsx/jsxs from react/jsx-runtime, which is slightly more efficient and no longer requires import React just to use JSX. Either way, the output is ordinary JavaScript objects (React elements) that React can walk and render - JSX itself has no special runtime behavior beyond being syntactic sugar.
