The JVM (Java Virtual Machine) is the runtime engine that actually executes Java bytecode - it's an abstract machine specification implemented differently on each OS/architecture, and it's what gives Java its 'write once, run anywhere' behavior. The JRE (Java Runtime Environment) is the JVM plus the core class libraries (java.lang, java.util, etc.) and supporting files needed to run compiled Java programs - it's what an end user needs to run Java applications, but it has no compiler. The JDK (Java Development Kit) is a superset of the JRE that adds development tools like javac (the compiler), javadoc, jdb (debugger), and jar - it's what a developer needs to write and compile Java code. So the relationship is: JDK contains JRE, and JRE contains JVM. A common follow-up: you can run a .class file with just a JRE, but you need the JDK to compile a .java file.
